The parallels of life and ninjutsu

Recently in my life there have been some really big challenges, life altering challenges representing life altering changes.  I woke up the other morning with a curious sense of calm.  I realized that despite all the challenges life throws at me, I can only deal with them one at a time, and only those which I have control over.  I can’t do anything about others actions, only my own, and how I personally deal with others actions.  I felt like I took a step up in the stairway of life, personal development to make me be able to be a better person.

Ninjutsu is like that too.  We are the only ones who control what we learn and how fast it is learned.  We can’t control others and how fast they learn and compare it to ourselves, and we can’t take to heart when others say you are the one holding them back or getting too far ahead. Personal understanding comes at it’s own pace, sometimes with a big bang and an ‘ah ha’ moment, sometimes slowly without us even realizing it.  And so we take a step up that long stairway of learning, feeling like we are better at our art.

Each stairway is never ending: the stairway of life and the stairway of learning.  With each step upwards there is a better understanding of where we are.  When we look at how far we have to go it can be daunting, but we need to remember to look back and see where we’ve come from; what we have accomplished.  We can take pride in each step climbed, every lesson learned – in or out of the dojo.  So, every time you look up and feel like you will never reach your goal think about 2 things: 1 – you’re right – you will never reach an end goal, it doesn’t exist, just constant room for improvement; and 2 – look behind you and see where you have come from, I’m certain the number of steps already taken will surprise you.
